Bioinspired tungsten-copper composites with Bouligand-type architectures mimicking fish scales

The microscopic Bouligand-type architectures of fish scales demonstrate a notable efficiency in enhancing the damage tolerance materials; nevertheless, it is challenging to reproduce metals. Here bioinspired tungsten-copper composites with different mimicking were fabricated by infiltrating copper melt into woven contextures tungsten fibers. These exhibit synergetic enhancement both strength and ductility at room temperature along an improved resistance high-temperature oxidization. strengths interpreted adapting classical laminate theory incorporate characteristics architectures. In particular, under load fibers can reorient adaptively within matrix their straightening, stretching, interfacial sliding matrix, cooperative kinking deformation fiber grids, representing successful implementation optimizing mechanisms enhance toughness. This study may serve promote development new high-performance for applications, e.g., as electrical contacts or heat sinks, offer viable approach constructing metallic materials.
